When in 1834, due to the revolution, all monasteries in Portugal were shut down, in an attempt at survival, someone from the monastery offered sweet pastries for sale in the shop nearby; pastries rapidly became known as ‘Pasteis de Belém.
Following the ancient ‘secret recipe’ from the monastery the pastry is succeeding to the present day…No wonder why after trying those delightful cakes!
