History lesson: the 1940s-retro and refined

This season’s trend in fashion is the forties style, which is often called the wartime fashion.

Women have replaced the men in the workforce and the epoch saw the first widespread of strict forms, masculine cut, tweed jackets and coats with oversized shoulders in female fashion.

Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli is credited with changing the outline of fashion from soft to hard and definite. She introduced the zipper, synthetic fabrics, simple suits, tailored evening dresses with matching jackets, wide shoulders.

In contrast with the hard chic some designers made soft, pretty dresses suited to a feminine figure.

The natural waistline was often accompanied by emphasis on an empire line.

Other notable fashion trends in this period include gloves as enormously important accessory in this period, polka dot, tiny flowers and costume stripes prints, over-the-knee pencil skirts, high-waist pleated or A-line skirts, accentuated waist.
