Location & Check-In:
Lobby somewhat aged and rather dark, Portrait of former German emperor hanging over fire place (running), efficient, friendly and personalized check-in, got a smoking room first, refused & got upgraded to Junior Suite – nice!
Rooms:
Very high ceilings, clean, furniture relatively basic for a five star, bathrooms large, clean but would need a facelift, linen and pillows decent …
Food:
Breakfast buffet plus optional egg dishes of very good quality and variety (with great view); In-house Chinese restaurant to be recommended; good value lunch, otherwise pricey even for a five star
Facilities:
Spa & Pool – as with the entire place in need of a thorough face lift, pool (about 12m) water relatively cold, sauna small. They should kick out the shabby infrared sauna right away. Friendly staff though
Overall Value & Rating:
Currently the five star in Hamburg with the lowest available rates (Jan 2010); given the tradition, location, great breakfast (get a package deal – at EUR 34 too richly priced) a preferred choice compared to the more non-descript chain hotels. Sooner or later the owners have to put serious money in it, though …
